Structural Engineering and Structural Design in Luxembourg

Structural design, static calculation and load transfer. For new builds as well as for conversions and renovations of existing properties.

What we do

Structural engineering

Why a structural assessment is needed

As soon as load-bearing components in a building are touched, structural engineering comes into play. This applies not only to new builds. Even when breaking through a wall in an existing flat, raising the height of a roof or installing an open staircase, a structural assessment is typically required. The structural engineer checks whether the planned interventions can be carried out without risk, dimensions columns and downstand beams, and specifies the sizing of the components.

In Luxembourg, the permit authority generally requires a structural safety certificate for projects subject to authorisation. We work with experienced structural engineers across the Greater Region and provide our clients with a coordinated overall package of planning, calculation and execution.

Structural work on existing buildings: renovation and conversion

When renovating older buildings, the question of load reserves is usually the first step. Before new plasterboard walls go up, an additional bathroom storey is planned or a ceiling is opened, it pays to take a sober look at the existing load-bearing structure. In most cases a careful adaptation is possible, occasionally additional steel beams or columns become necessary.

We coordinate this in interplay with our old-building renovation team and the interior fit-out, so that no trades work past one another and the schedules align.

Structural work in new builds: load-bearing structure and load transfer

In a new build, the load-bearing structure shapes the architecture from an early stage. Wall thicknesses, storey heights, spans, all of this is set during design and verified against itself. We bring the structural perspective into the planning process early on, so that nothing has to be corrected later. The sizing follows the applicable Eurocodes and the national adjustments for Luxembourg.

For industrial-hall construction and larger commercial properties we work with composite steel-and-concrete structures, which allow generous spans without intermediate columns.

Working with architects and clients

Structural engineering is rarely the trade a client mentions first. It still becomes one of the most important disciplines as soon as plans change. A short-notice change in wall layout or an additional opening in the loft generally costs a lot of time without early structural clarification. We bring architects, structural engineers and specialist planners around one table before the design planning is signed off.
